High Rate Deformation Group

The goal of the High Rate Deformation Group is to develop models capable of predicting the mechanical response of a material under extreme conditions. To model material behavior effectively requires knowledge of the fundamental deformation processes and their relationship to bulk properties. This necessitates an interdisciplinary approach to reveal the mechanisms at different length and time scales and allow their incorporation within plasticity codes.

Our approach combines bulk mechanical property evaluation at different temperatures and strain rates, and microstructural characterization including straining in the transmission electron microscope to reveal the evolution of microstructure. The experimental results serve as the basis for our modeling effort and as a means to validate its predications.
